What should we buy? Reciprocating Air Compressor or Screw Air Compressor?
If you are searching for a new air compressor you may be wondering about the differences between screw and reciprocating compressors. But while both types of compressors generate compressed air, there are important differences in how they work and the applications they are best suited for. Here is how to choose between a reciprocating and rotary compressor for your operation.
BASIC DIFFERENCE:
We need to know that both Reciprocating & Screw Compressors produce air using “POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT”. That is they squeeze air mechanically to reduce its volume, But the mechanics of how they do is different.
WHAT IS RECIPROCATING & WHAT IS ROTARY SCREW AIR COMPRESSORS?
A reciprocating air compressor also known as a piston-type air compressor uses pistons driven by a crankshaft to compress the air. Rotary screw air compressors use two meshing helical screws, known as rotors, to compress the air. As the interlocking spirals turn, the air is forced through the chambers and compressed into a smaller space. With this process, the air is continuously compressed as the rotors turn.
COMPONENTS INVOLVED
With just two moving parts (screws) that have a small gap between them, screw air compressors are not subject to much wear and tear. Even in models where the two screws come in contact with each other, they don’t encounter any friction, which is why they are less likely to break down.
On the other hand, reciprocating air compressors have several moving parts like pistons, piston rings, connecting rods, and inlet-outlet valves due to which they are noisier and may need stocking of spares.
ADVANTAGES — SCREW AIR COMPRESSORS
- Continuous air supply
- Higher duty cycle
- Better durability
- Higher overall efficiency
- Lower ambient noise
- Higher airflow per rated power
ADVANTAGES — RECIPROCATING AIR COMPRESSORS
- Very high-pressure requirements
- Spare parts management
- Lower duty cycle
